Georgia Gwinnett College professor spends summer at Skidaway Institute

Michelle Huang is a visiting scholar from Georgia Gwinnett College. She will be working with the Frischer lab through July.

At GCC, she teaches analytical chemistry and principles of chemistry courses, and guides undergraduate research in water quality projects. Her current research interest focuses on trace level pesticides and heavy metals in water and beverage.

Before joining GGC in 2013, Huang was a senior fellow at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for five and a half years. Her work at the CDC focused on studying the broad impact of various carcinogenic compounds and cigarette smoking to public health. She also worked at the Coca-Cola Company for eight years as a senior scientist in its R&D department, working on new product development, quality control, and trademark protection.

Huang received her B.S. in chemistry from Peking University (China) and her Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Washington, where she studied the distributions and fluxes of methyl halides in natural waters and the impact of these trace gases to global ozone depletion. In order to collect air and water samples and analyze target compounds on site, she participated in several research cruises in the Pacific and Indian Oceans during her graduate school years.

In her leisure time, Huang enjoys coffee and tea time with friends and family. She collects Precious Moments figurines and Coca-Cola bottles, and loves walking and baking with her two young daughters.
