Research Interests:

Research in the Harvey Lab focuses on plankton ecology. In particular our research focuses on how important ecological interactions (competition, predation, mutalism, commensalism) between individuals (from viruses to mesozooplankton) can influence larger-scale patterns in plankton abundance, distribution, and physiology. We focus on understanding the role of biotic interactions on the marine environment by linking observations made at three scales: (1) molecular/chemical: discovering infochemicals and observing variations in gene expression; (2) individual: quantifying individual movement behavior by observing microscopic interactions; and (3) community: capturing the resultant macroscopic shifts in population dynamics and physiological rates. Deciphering these interactions will elucidate the function of marine plankton in mediating ocean healthy, biogeochemical cycles, and global climate.
